Mudlogging, Mud Logging, and Surface Logging

Mudlogging refers to the collection and of well site data as it relates to rate of penetration (ROP), gas, chromatography, sample and fluorescence analysis, formation evaluation, pressure detection and more. Most professionals use the terms mudlogging, mud logging (two words), and surface logging interchangeably although some companies try to make a distinction between surface logging and mudlogging as if they are offering something special to their clients that other companies do not offer.

Mudlogging companies usually set up in a mobile laboratory called a mudlogging trailer or mudlogging unit. With the advent of new, portable instruments mudlogging operations are sometimes held in operator supplied well site command centers.

Mudlogging services can not only find oil and gas zones while drilling but can also predict abnormal pressure, suggest casing points, and act as the eyes and ears of offsite oil company geologists. Whether you call it mudlogging, mud logging (two words), or surface logging, mudlogging provides valuable services to oil companies.
